gfortune

Introduction

This program was once referred to by a friend as that smart alec fortune program. I liked BSD fortune, but I wanted a couple of extra features. Then I read it and didn't like it, and so I started up on a full rewrite.

A week later, I had gfortune. I did weird things in those days.

Version 1.0.1 is released 7 years after version 1.0.0 because although you wouldn't think it, the C language has changed just a little in all that time. There was really little other purpose to a rerelease. I didn't put all the autoconf #ifdefs in, but the idea is there.

Version 1.0.0 is the rerelease with some user contributed patches included, please send me any bugfixes. This is also the first release of my fortune cookie database, still unsorted and containing much that is ephemeral or downright inaccurate. I believe that this distribution of quotes constitutes 'fair use of material'. Please note that while I maintain the cookie files, I do not ROT13 the offensive quotes, if you are easily offended, don't browse the files.

Features

Bugs

Not every possible method and combination of methods of specifying files on the commandline works, but in all common modes of use, it works fine.

Requirements

strfile from the Berkeley fortune and BSDgames distribution is still required for building your own data files.
